I don't know why I am continually surprised each time something is wrong with my new baby. I really had some unrealistic expectations on how things were going to go down. I'm slowly, so slowly, learning that just because he is my seventh baby that I don't know everything.

Little baby George can't seem to catch a break. Just when I thought things were going better with him being on the bottle he starts screaming again. Every time he starts screaming I go through a mental checklist: has he been fed, check, clean diaper, check, is he tired, and so on. If none of those things seem to work and he is still crying, I just suck it up, and sometimes even cry with him.

I recently went camping with my family; one of my sisters was trying to hold my baby while I got my camp set up. He screamed the whole time. She could do nothing to soothe him or calm him down. Another sister noticed that he had a white film on his tongue and suggested that he probably had thrush. I've never had a baby have thrush before, so it wasn't even on my radar.

To be honest, I noticed the white gunk on his tongue a while ago, but I figured that formula babies just had weird tongues. I found out, they don't.

We were stuck up in the hills with a sad baby, but luckily the first aid kit of a hippie is a bunch of oils and herbs. I had some diluted melaleuca oil and some frankincense oil and I put them right onto his tongue. He had instant relief. When I changed his diaper, I would put melaleuca on his feet, and if he started screaming for no reason I would put the oils on his tongue. I also scrubbed any bottles or binkis that he used to make sure I killed any remaining thrush.

After we got home I have just put melaleuca, and sometimes oregano, on the bottom of his feet and it seems to be doing the trick. He isn't just screaming anymore, so I consider that a win.

I didn't know what thrush even was so I looked it up. It's an infection caused by candida fungus, which is yeast. Apparently, it can be quite painful. One downside of getting an antibiotic for thrush is that antibiotics can cause thrush, uh, lame.

I will put the melaleuca on him for at least a week three times a day. So far his tongue is white gunk free!
